Sant’Agata Bolognese (Sant’Èghete in western bolognese dialect; Sant’Ègata in bolognese city dialect) is a small plain town, located between the provinces of Bologna and Modena, famous in the world as the seat of Lamborghini car factory, born in 1963 thanks to Ferruccio Lamborghini.
However, Sant’Agata is not only a land of motors, milestone for those who wants to visit the Motor Valley: it is a very rich village with a unique historical and cultural heritage that has its roots in antiquity, evidenced by terramare settlements from Bronze Age found in the area of Montironi and Crocetta. Furthermore, the countryside of Sant’Agata Bolognese shows evident persistences of centuriation, the roman system to organize the agricultural lands through a grid of roads, canals and plots; the archaeological finds from the roman period are exceptional, some of which are currently exhibited at the Town Hall.
The current historic centre dates back to the 11th century (the ancient castrum S. Andrea in Argene), whose tower – now the “Bell Tower” – is the oldest example present in the area of Terre d’acqua municipalities (1020 A.D.). Two doors gave access to the medieval fortified settlement: the one called “di sotto” (Porta Otesia) and the other called “di sopra”, which is no longer preserved.
Scrolls and manuscripts stored in the Partecipanza Agraria archive of Sant’Agata, document a history full of events, clashes and encounters characteristic of a borderland. Partecipanza is a form of collective ownership, born in the Middle Ages, which still today guarantees all the descendants of the ancient farming families the privilege of taking part in the distribution of the land patrimony and in the administration of the common lands that are part of the Institute. Even today this ancient institution represents an important historical-documentary-identitary heritage for the community.
